In my opinion, the only way to travel in Taiwan is by scooter. If you reside here like us, a scooter offers an efficient mode of transportation at a good price. On the busy, chaotic, and down-right dangerous streets of Kaohsiung, a scooter is definitely your best bet.
Personally, I drive a 125CC Kymco Herself. It’s the zippy scooter pictured above. You can buy a decent used scooter in Kaohsiung for around $15,000 NT or $500 US. If you intend to use your scooter to drive into the mountains, I wouldn’t recommend buying anything less than a 125CC. If you want a scooter primarily for city travel, you can find a practical scooter as low as 50CC.
If you are in Kaohsiung or any other major Taiwanese destination only for a day or two, consider renting a scooter to get around. Most of the time, there are scooter rental shops clustered around any major train station. I promise you will see and experience much more on a scooter than on a bus or in a taxi. Just make sure you have a well-fitted helmet and be careful!
